New Elections in Belarus May Be Held in 2012

04/08/10

Leader of Za Svabodu (For Freedom) Movement, Alexander Milinkevich, stated that next presidential election might take place in a year after the elections of 2011. According to one of opposition leaders, Belarus' democratic forces should prepare for new elections already now.

"We must think about these elections and about those, the following. And not for 2015-2020. Elections may be held in six months, may take place in a year", Alexander Milinkevich said. He believes that it might be caused by deep economic crisis, the country is now in, as well as "great pressure of Moscow".

"All this may lead to that current government, Lukashenko will leave. And there will be scheduled new elections. We must prepare for them today. Every day. Even participating in these elections. And we'll have to win these elections in open battle. In democratic or semi-democratic environment", the leader of Za Svabodu (For freedom) Movement declared.

According to him, the main question today is if Belarusian opposition with no single candidate "wins top bureaucracy, Moscow candidate", European Radio for Belarus informs.

Alexander Milinkevich, who declared himself the leader of pro-Belarus pro-European forces, insists on that Belarus should take European way to improve standards of living.

We will stay here, but we want to build civil society, Milinkevich

"When I speak about the European way, it does not mean that we have to gather all Belarusians and take them somewhere to Brussels. We will stay here. But we want to build both the state and civil society. And to have such Constitution as democratic countries have", the candidate for presidency explained. "I'm not going to justify Europe - it is not perfect. And it is not united in its views and approaches. But we could be at totally different level", he added.

Nevertheless, Alexander Milinkevich believes that dialogue with current Belarusian authorities is needed. "In Belarus there lives not only Lukashenko - in Belarus there also live almost ten million Belarusians. And if we do not hold this dialogue, we all will land with parachute in Smolensk region in Russia", the politician said.

As Telegraf previously reported, leader of Za Svabodu (For freedom) Movement, Alexander Milinkevich, running for presidency of Belarus in forthcoming elections, stated that he took leader's role of pro-Belarus pro-European forces. At present, he sees one of the major goals for democratic forces not really in preparation for coming presidential election, which, according to former presidential candidate, "there are no in reality", but for elections to be announced after "the authorities will have to leave".
