Brest activists hold action on the anniversary of Zavadski’s disappearance (photos)
The members of the Movement for Freedom (MFF), of the Belarusian Popular Front party (BPF), and human rights advocates handed out the literature on The International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance to the city residents.
Informing of the people was performed beside the Maskouski District Administration of Brest, and lasted for about an hour. The activists told people of the problem of violent disappearances and of the corresponding Convention passed by the UN General Assembly but still not signed by Belarus. Those who were interested received The Convention Now! booklet.
“10 minutes after the beginning of the action, a security guard came and detained Andrey Sharenda who was photographing the event. He also declared that the distribution of the literature was unauthorized. We had to dial the 102 telephone number (the militia) so that the militia stopped the unlawful acts of their colleague. A security party came, as well as an operational investigative group, and the members of the civil security militia. Finally, the law enforcement officers agreed that our acts were lawful, and went away”, the MFF activist Raman Kislak tells about the details of the action.
For your reference – TV camera operator Dzimtry Zavadski disappeared under unascertained circumstances on July 7, 2000 in the Minsk-2 airport. Prior to this, politician Viktar Hanchar, general Yury Zakharanka, and businessman Anatol Krasouski disappeared mysteriously. The opposition suspects the country’s higher leadership is responsible for these disappearances.
