The prospects of the Eastern Partnership Initiative to be considered in Minsk

02/07/10

The Conference of the National Civil Society Forum named The Road Map of the Eastern Partnership for Belarus will take place on July 5-6.

The representatives of the organizations of the Belarusian civil society, the authorized persons of the Belarusian government, of the diplomatic missions of the EU countries, and of the Eastern Partnership Initiative partner-states, as well as the representatives of the expert community of Belarus are invited to the Conference of the National Civil Society Forum named The Road Map of the Eastern Partnership for Belarus that will take place on July 5-6 in Minsk.

The organizing committee of the Conference includes, among other organizations, the Movement for Freedom (MFF) human rights advocacy civil association. It is known that the event will be attended by the deputy head of the MFF Viktar Karnieyenka, and by the advisor to the MFF leader Ales Lahviniec.

The Conference is devoted to the consideration of the current and the prospective activity of the Civil Society Forum as one of the major institutional actors of the Eastern Partnership Initiative, as well as of the further ways of developing and strengthening the Eastern Partnership Initiative both in Belarus and at the European level.

For reference – the Eastern Partnership Initiative is a multilateral structure for cooperation proposed by the European Union to the six states of the Eastern Europe: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.

The first Civil Society Forum of the Eastern Partnership Initiative was held in Brussels on November 16-17, 2009; the Belarusian organizations showed their high activity, leadership, and solidarity having managed – together with their colleagues from other countries – to raise the institutional status of the Forum. Two representatives of Belarus were elected to the Coordinating Committee of the Civil Society Forum, and one of the leaders of the Belarusian third sector Siarhiey Matskievich became the official speaker of the Civil Society Forum.

At the January 29, 2010 meeting of the participants of the first Forum and of the interested representatives of the Belarusian civil society, the decision was taken on the further development of the National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Initiative’s Civil Society Forum as the instrument of mature public communication and of the dialogue for the interests of raising the efficiency of the activity within the framework of the Eastern Partnership Initiative in Belarus.
