Voluntary joint work at the birth village of Larysa Hieniyush

25/06/10

The Movement for Freedom (MFF) Hrodna activists invite to Zhlobautsy village on June 26 to take part in the improvement of the place where the famous Belarusian poetess was born.

The participants shall gather and start working at 10 a.m. Everyone who wishes is invited. The organizers will provide the tools and will organize a meal.

To get to the location, one shall turn in Skidziel from the Hrodna-Minsk highway to Vaukavysk (if you go from Vaukavysk, you shall, naturally, turn to Skidziel), then a turn to Repla village, and in some 2 kilometers you’ll see the farm buildings on the left. Unfortunately, this is the today’s landmark of the place where the Miklashevichs family manor was located where Larysa Hieniyush was born. See the road map here. Telephone for contacts: (+375) 296 607 299.

Larysa Hieniyush was born in Zhlobautsy manor in 1910. In 1937, Mrs. Hieniyush with her husband Yanka Hieniyush left for Prague. Some years later, the house was transported by her relatives to Vaukavysk; only the foundation of the former manor remains now. The poetess visited her native Zhlobautsy often: “Blessed be the home where are my parents and the whole dear family. Blessed be the tiny plot of the native, father’s land on the vast planet that was named Zhlobautsy. Was named… since it doesn’t exist now – neither the manor, nor even its name. Now, it is a collective farm with some ultra-Soviet name; the house was transported to Vaukavysk together with the barnyard; and only a long brick cowshed stands at the place where our house was located, as well as several trees that just haven’t yet been rooted out by peasants for firewood. When I visit the place I ask to leave at least the trees...”, she remembered these places in her Confessions book. For reference –Belarus will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Larysa Hieniyush’s birth this August.
