MFF ratifies the single candidate election procedure

10/06/10

This decision was taken at the regular session of the Council of the Movement for Freedom (MFF) that was held on June 8.

The following issues were considered at the session: participation in the presidential election, admission of new members to the organization, and coordination of the regional activity.

The MFF deputy head Yuras Hubarevich told about the proposed single candidate election procedures that were considered at the latest session of the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) party. As is known, the procedure proposed by the BPF was taken as a basis. According to it, the voters’ boards – 10 persons from each BIB (Belarusian Independence Bloc) entity that delegates its candidate – shall be created in the regions and shall evaluate each candidate based on the tree-grade scale from the point of view of several criteria.

The Council’s session has generally ratified the single candidate election procedure proposed by the BPF. According to Hubarevich, the procedure could be ratified by the managing bodies of other organizations in the nearest future.

The Council proposed completing the procedure of electing the BIB single candidate till July 1, and starting the formation of the election headquarters. The participants supported the opinion that the headquarters should be formed by the single candidate elected in accordance with the BIB’s procedure in order to ensure a coordinated and efficient work throughout the presidential campaign.

In his speech, another MFF deputy head Viktar Karnieyenka said of the need to continue searching for other entities willing to support the BIB’s single candidate. In his opinion, the likely allies include the Freedom and Progress Party and the “Greens” Party, as well as a range of youth and civil organization.

According to the MFF Council, the precise execution of the single candidate election procedure is necessary to accommodate the interest of every BIB entity, and to preserve its power and unity. Moreover, this procedure legitimates the candidate of the right pro-European forces in the voters’ eyes who wait for a single candidate now.

At the Council’s session, eleven new members were admitted to the MFF, and the issue of coordinating the MFF’s activity in the Mahilou and in the Hrodna regions was considered. On Vital Vasilkou’s proposal, Ales Silkou was appointed as the Mahilou region coordinator.
