BIB Council defining the procedure of election of a single candidate
The issue of the Belarusian Independence Bloc (BIB) joining by the European Coalition, and the ways of designating a presidential candidate from the BIB were discussed during the Council’s session.
The opinion of the BIB Council guest Mikola Statkievich – who suggested the joining by the European Coalition’s entities to the Belarusian Independence Bloc – was listened to at the session. However, it was discovered that not all members of the European Coalition (in particular, the leadership of the Freedom and Progress Party) know of this initiative.
Since Statkievich’s initiative hasn’t been coordinated with every participant of the European Coalition at the moment, the BIB Council couldn’t take a common decision concerning this proposal.
The second item of the Council’s session was to consider the projects of the procedure of election of a BIB single candidate (It was previously planned that the procedure would be approved before July 1). The projects of the following entities were considered: the Movement for Freedom (MFF), the Belarusian Christian Democracy party (BCHD), the Belarusian Popular Front party (BPF), and the Young Front movement. The procedure proposed by the BPF was supported by the required number of votes (six out of eight members of the Council).
This procedure includes the key items of the projects proposed by other BIB members. The single candidate will be defined in accordance with the developed criteria. The candidate will be accessed by the electors’ colleges that should be created in every region of Belarus and in Minsk city, and that will be composed of the regional activists of the organizations that nominated their candidate. The results will be announced by the counting commission that will include one representative from every BIB entity.
The Belarusian Christian Democracy party and the Young Front movement aren’t yet ready to accept the BPF’s project as the final option, and propose making it the basic model with the possibility of making further changes and amendments. Nevertheless, according to the MFF deputy head Yuras Hubarevich, the entities that do not object to the procedure accepted by the BIB Council can start their work on nominating a single candidate.
“It’s very good that the BIB has actually defined the procedure of election of a single candidate. The MFF had a slightly other vision; however, we finally agreed with the procedure proposed by the BPF party. Under this procedure, the consideration of the candidates and the voting should take place within a month. This procedure provides the possibility to account in the best way for the opinion of regional activists who will, in fact, bear the main weight of the campaign”, the MFF deputy head Hubarevich thinks.
