MFF activists’ appeals registered in the UN Committee

26/05/10

Dzianis Turcheniak and Raman Kislak filed their individual reports to the UN Human Right Committee in November 2009.

The Movement for Freedom (the MFF) activists state that the Belarusian authorities limit their rights to free expression of their opinion envisaged by Article 19 of the International Pact on Civil and Political Rights, and that their attempts to appeal against the decisions of the officials in court were futile.

“The prohibition of pickets is the discrimination based on beliefs (Article 26 of the International Pact on Civil and Political Rights), as well as of our right to a fair trial (paragraph 1 of Article 14 of the Pact) and of the right to peaceful meetings (Article 21 of the Pact)”, Kislak thinks.

The Brest city authorities regularly prohibit pickets and other mass events in the city centre. The appeal was based on the prohibition of the picket dedicated to the installation of the monument of the 1000th anniversary of Brest. The pickets were planned to be held at Hohal str. beside the location where the monument should have been installed. The authorities prohibited the event since the only official place for protest meetings is the Lakamatyu stadium.
