Understanding the history
The Minsk youth of the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) held the discussion on the topic “Modern history of the Eastern Europe”.
The following persons spoke before the Minsk citizens: Doctor of History Patrick Plescott, the member of the National Memory Institute (Poland) and Doctor of History Petr Rowbla, and the member of the Modern History Institute of the Czech Academy of Science. The meeting lasted for three hours. The speeches were translated into Belarusian.
Mr. Rowbla told about the modern history of the Eastern Europe. Mr. Plescott dedicated his speech to the political transformations in Poland in 1988-1990.
The participants of the discussion talked about the history of the opposition movements of the states of the Central and Eastern Europe before the 1990’s, about the state ideologies of that time, about the activity of the communist secret agencies, about the life of common people in the context of totalitarian regimes, etc.
Every citizen should remember well the history of his or her country, including the bad things that happened, so that we don’t pay twice for the mistakes of the past.
