Milinkevich Stated in the U.S about the "Turning Point in the Struggle Against Dictatorship"
The leader of “Za Savbodu” (For Freedom) Movement, Aliaksandr Milinkevich, during his visit to Washington, stated that currently there come "a turning point in the struggle against dictatorship for the independence of Belarus". In this regard, the politician called on the U.S. authorities to "continue a policy of supporting democracy and civil society in Belarus" and thanked them for their assistance.
"Our first and absolute demand to the regime is to release all political prisoners and stop repressions against social activists. It is very important that our western partners regularly remind about this to the authorities at the time of contacts", the press service of “Za Svabodu” (For Freedom) Movement quotes its leader.
On Tuesday, May 25, the ex-presidential candidate met with former U.S. Ambassador to Minsk, and now Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy and Human Rights, Karen Stewart, Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, Congressman Alcee Hastings, the author of the Belarus Democracy Act, Congressman Christopher Smith and other politicians, BelaPAN informs.
Earlier, on May 24, Aliaksandr Milinkevich, held meetings with the leader of the National Democratic Institute, Kenneth Wollak, and the National Endowment for Democracy, Carl Gershman, Congressman Thaddeus McCotter, Senator and former presidential candidate John McCain, director of the office of Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus at the Department of State, Lawrence Silverman, and director of the office of Russia at the National Security Council, Leslie Gayden.
