Alaksandr Milinkievich participates in the international conference The Baltic Freedom: the Next Twenty Years

The Movement for Freedom (the MFF) leader made a speech as part of the discussion of the possibilities of cooperation between the Baltic states and Belarus in democracy promotion.


In his speech, Alaksandr Milinkievich concentrated on the challenges faced by Belarus on its path towards democratization, gave the assessment of the today’s dialogue between Belarus and the EU, and called on the Baltic states not only to improve the policy of dialogue but also to support the civil society of Belarus – in particular, to promote the freedom of mass media (including through extension of the Belsat TV channel broadcasting) and the development of civil initiatives at the local level.


The Baltic Freedom: the Next Twenty Years conference was organized by the Centre for European Studies (CES) of the European People’s Party. The conference was attended by the EPP head Wilfred Martens, by the Lithuania’s prime-minister Andrius Kubіlіus, by the speaker of the Lithuanian parliament Irena Degutienė, by the minister of national defense of Lithuania Rasa Juknevičienė, by the former Estonian prime minister Mart Laar, by the former foreign minister of Latvia Māris Riekstiņš, as well as by many other well-known European policy makers and European Parliament deputies.


This conference was held in the building of the Lithuania’s parliament, and was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the independence of Lithuania. During the conference, Vytautas Landsbergis, the deputy of the European Parliament and the former head of state who managed to achieve the independence for his country, was honoured with the “EPP Merit Award”.
