Get a Fine if You Sign (Photo)

Workers of several enterprises in Haradok (Viciebsk region) are forced to give their passports to administrations for a week. Such practice makes them unable to sign for an opposition MP candidate who runs elections in the town.

Aliaksandr Milinkevich visited Haradok and Viciebsk and took part in the work of opposition activists’ initiative groups which are carrying out electoral campaigns in the region.

Leanid Haravy, a head of the initiative group for Leanid Autuhou, argues that authorities put big pressure on people who do not take the side of the “official” candidates in elections. Workers are demanded by local administrations to give their signatures for official MP candidates in factories. Once scared people sign for officials they are told not to give a signature to anybody else. Administrations of some factories go even further.

They ask workers to bring their passports in order to keep the unique election recognizable ID in factory for a week. This is typical situation for small towns throughout the country, - says Leanid Haravy.

For a while Leanid Autuhou has got almost 1.000 voters’ signatures in the Viciebsk rural electoral district.

Aliaksandr Milinkvich was collecting signatures for Aliaksei Haurucikau in the Smalenski market in Viciebsk.

Throughout all this time Milinkevich has been followed by the senior seller’s controller in the market. Rather abusing her power, the controller fined those sellers who put their signatures for Aliaksei Haurucikau.
