MFF Council initiating Alaksandr Milinkievich’s nomination as candidate for president

30/04/10

At the Council’s session, the issue of the participation of the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) in the presidential election was considered, the results of the local election were discussed, and new members were included into the MFF.

At the beginning of the session, the proposals on the election of a single candidate were listened to. The proposals were presented by the representatives of the Intellectuals Council Uladzimir Kolas and Anatol Hulayeu.

The decision was made at the MFF Council session on the “Preparation to the presidential election” which implies the following: the delegation of Alaksandr Milinkievich as a candidate for president at the next election is initiated, the MFF leadership is charged with the continuation of consulting with the MFF partners of the Belarusian Independence Bloc (BIB) and with other parties interested in the issue of the efficient campaigning, the formation of the pre-election headquarters begins, and the call for all interested parties and activists is spread to join the campaign.

The Council members listened to the report of the MFF deputy head Yuras Hubarevich on the results of the election campaign to local Councils. The MFF was one of the first organizations to announce its participation in the election campaign. According to Hubarevich, 83 people were delegated from the MFF, with the stake placed on quality – the people were delegated who were engaged in active civil work in their respective regions. However, the undemocratic and restricted nature of the election campaign didn’t allow the MFF representatives to be elected as deputies of local Councils.

The Council voted for inclusion of 74 new members in the Movement for Freedom human rights advocacy and enlightenment civil association, as well as for exclusion of Ales Mikhalevich from the organization based on his application.

A decision was also taken at the session to call on the Belarusian society and on the international community to renounce the results of the election to local Councils, and to demand discontinuing the politically motivated persecution of the candidate for deputy to the Masty District Council Ales Zarembiuk and of other activists of the Hrodna province.

The MFF Council thinks the criminal case initiated by the Hrodna Province KGB Administration (Committee for State Security) against the regional coordinator of the MFF Ales Zarembiuk is explained by his active civil position and by his participation in the local election campaign as a candidate for deputy. The acts of political persecution were also performed by the KGB against three other Hrodna province candidates for deputies. The MFF Council condemns the politically motivated persecution of the activists, and calls on the Belarusian authorities to discontinue political repressions against the citizens of Belarus.
