Are Members of District Electoral Commissions Allowed to Use Laptops?

08/08/08

Juras Meliashkevich, a member of the Jasieninskaja district electoral commission (DEC) №100 and an activist of the Movement for Freedom, lodged an inquiry to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) on the possibility to use notebook computer during the work in the DEC.

The issue came up as Ms. Taciana Krauchanka, a Chairperson of the Jasieninskaja DEC, banned the members of the DEC from using laptops not only during the DEC’s meetings but on their day duty. So, I made an inquiry to the CEC. - said Juras Meliashkevich.

“Does Belarusian legislation (the Electoral Code and other regulations) contain any norm which sets restrictions on the use of such hi-tech appliance? If it does, does this restriction apply to other portable hi-tech devices such as mobile phones, communicators, iPhones, etc) since they are commonly used for communication by the DEC members as well,” - the activist asked the CEC in his inquiry.
