“No” to alcohol abuse!

30/03/10

The activists of the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) and of the Right Alliance youth organization demand that the nighttime sale of alcoholic beverages be prohibited.

200 residents of the Maskouski district of Minsk have already supported the initiative of the democratic activists.

The signees of the collective appeal to the Minsk City Executive Committee demand that the sale of the alcohol products be ceased at nighttime at the territory of the city – in particular, they request the prohibition of the sale of alcoholic beverages by the night department of the state-owned Azarennie company shop No.28 located at Bielski st. 69.

According to the initiators of the campaign, the sale of alcohol at any time of day promotes the alcoholization of the Belarusian society.

According to the statistics, 182 thousand people are included in the alcohol addiction register of the health care institutions of Belarus. 16 thousand teenagers have the “chronic alcohol addiction” diagnosis. In 2009, alcohol consumption per a Belarusian amounted to 14 litres in the equivalent of pure alcohol, which considerably exceeds the dangerous limit of 8 litres set by the World Health Organization.

The Right Alliance activists also filed a request to the City Executive Committee for the picket against alcohol and drug abuse. The activists intend to protest against the production and sale of cheap fruit wine beverages in Belarus, as well as against the sale of the alcohol products at nighttime, and against the free sale of the unprocessed food poppy corns that contain opium. The picket is planned to be held at 6 p.m. on April 15 on the Bangalore square.
