Baranavichy commission makes election with no choice (photo)
Nine of the ten democratic contenders weren’t registered as candidates for deputies to the Baranavichy Town Council.
In particular, the city territorial election commission didn’t register Ryhor Hryk who was delegated from the Movement for Freedom (the MFF).
In the signature lists of the MFF activist, the commission “found” over 15% of dates that, allegedly, were not written by the signees – as is required by the law – but by Hryk himself. Only Alaksandr Halkievich (The Just World communist party) who will be delegated in the town constituency No.25 was registered by the commission as candidate for deputy of the Baranavichy Town Council.
The members of the town territorial election commission “didn’t find” any mistakes in the documents filed by the 36 pro-government candidates for deputies to local Councils, whereas opposition candidates had “numerous mistakes and inaccuracies” in their documents. Therefore, nine of the ten contenders from democratic parties and organizations weren’t registered as candidates for deputies of local Councils.
Almost complete non-registration of the candidates who are inconvenient for the local authorities led to the absence of any choice in 34 of the 36 constituencies.
In the three-day term, Hryk will appeal to court against the decision of the Baranavichy town territorial election commission.
The session of the Baranavichy town territorial election commission on the registration of candidates for deputies to local Councils began at 5 p.m. on March 25 – precisely before the celebration of the Freedom Day (or the Independence Day) in Minsk. Therefore, many democratic activists didn’t manage to participate in the celebration. The representatives of the independent Intex-Press publication weren’t allowed to be present at the session.
