The Freedom Day (photo coverage)
The celebration of the Freedom Day (or Independence Day) took place at the square beside the Academy of Sciences.
Renowned public figures, swans, and poets delivered their congratulatory speeches. Since the motorcar with the loudspeaker equipment was detained, the speakers used the megaphone promptly supplied by the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) activists. The following persons delivered their speeches: Alaksiey Yanukievich, Vital Rymasheuski, Ales Lahviniec, Viachaslau Siuchyk, Uladzimir Niaklayeu, as well as other well-known persons.
The national white-red-white flags, toy balloons, and parties’ logos wavered over the crowd. The participants of the event included the activists of the MFF, the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) party, the Belarusian Christian Democracy (BCHD) party, the United Civil Party (UCP), the European Belarus movement, the Free Belarus movement, and the Young Belarus youth movement.
After the end of the complimentary speeches, the democratic activists moved closer to the Independence avenue (Niezalezhnastsi avenue) carrying large banners of their organizations and national Belarusian flags. Motorcar drivers actively supported the celebration participants with motorhorns.
The attempt of a part of youth activists to go along the avenue’s sidewalks to the city centre was stopped by the equipped Special Militia Force personnel.
