Milinkevich: “It makes no sense to repeat previous proposal”

04/08/08

In view of the publication concerning possible negotiations between the opposition and the Belarusian regime, appeared in the Polish daily “Dziennik”, Aliaksandr Milinkevich has stated:

“As far back as February 2007 I sent an open letter to Lukashenka, suggesting to start a real dialogue in Belarus. My position does remain unchanged since confrontation within the society does not bring anything good to Belarusian people. It is in the interest of all people in Belarus to have confidence-building conditions, to have democratisation and liberalisation processes developing as well as to expand cooperation with other European countries. A wide public dialogue between all the parties concerned will become a path to these benefits.

An opportunity to start such a dialogue may become reality only if the regime proves its readiness by unconditionally releasing all political prisoners - Aliaksandr Kazulin, Andrei Kim and Siarhei Parsiukevich, by ceasing any politically motivated persecution and by eliminating barriers to free exchange of information within the Belarusian society.

Should Belarusian authorities demonstrate evident facts which prove their readiness for an intra-Belarusian dialogue, respectable European politicians shall be invited as mediators.”
