Oddity of the day: commission accepting a single signature

24/03/10

The Movement for Freedom (the MFF) activist Mikita Krasnou was denied to be registered as candidate for deputy in the Autazavadskaya constituency No.4 of Minsk.

Two important reasons were the basis for the refusal – allegedly, 53 of the 54 verified signatures in support of the youth activist were found to be forged! Moreover, the inspectors found Krasnou’s income of Br360,000 (around €85) that wasn’t included in his tax statement.

The contender is indignant about such claims, and intends to appeal against the constituency commission’s decision as soon as possible.

“Over a half of the signatures filed we collected by me personally. The rest of the signatures were collected by my old friends and colleagues whom I have known from the school days. The members of my initiative group worked exceptionally honestly, and such reason for refusal humiliates us. Likewise, I cannot imagine where did they find those Br360,000”, Krasnou says.

According to the activist, the Commission declared such great number of signatures to be false in order to complicate the procedure of appealing against this decision to higher institutions.

Krasnou has been well known in the Zavadski district of Minsk due to his vigorous civil activity. He demanded from the local authorities to solve the problems of capital repairs of housing facilities several times, and helped the local residents to organize themselves in order to write collective appeals to officials. He participated in the 2008 election campaign as candidate for deputy of the House of Representatives.
