Biarozauka residents demanding environmental impact assessment
The Movement for Freedom (the MFF) activists arranged a collective address to the local authorities demanding to perform the environmental impact assessment of glass wool production which is to start at the Nioman glass factory before long.
Over 300 people have already signed this address to be sent to the Town Executive Committee and to the Town Council.
The project on glass wool production in Biarozauka town has been approved. Preparatory work has already begun. Allegedly, the equipment will be installed in the nearest future. The production should begin next year. However, common workers were the last to know of the management’s plans. The project was passed in the absence of any public discussion. Rumour has it that the Ministry officials were hesitating quite long before taking the final decision exactly due to the production’s harmfulness.
“The purpose of this address is not to ban the production, for we understand that new capacities could improve the economic situation at the factory. It is very important that the residents’ health isn’t endangered by the production, since glass wool production technology uses great volumes of formaldehyde resin that is harmful for human health”, the MFF activist Siarhiey Trafimchyk says.
The MFF activist notes that the Republic of Belarus ratified the Arhus Convention that grants the rights to the citizens to participate in solving the issues relating to the environment and to living conditions, as well as to timely receive complete information on these issues.
