A monument could lose its authenticity
Anton Astapovich, the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) activist and the head of the History and Culture Monuments Protection Society, asks the Ministry of Culture to stop the “restoration” of the Pshazdzietskis family palace at the Svabody square 15 in Minsk.
According to Astapovich, the palace’s unique interior wall paintings – discovered by the Belarusian restoring painter Uladzimir Rakitski – would be destroyed during the so called “restoration”. The state-owned Minskaya Spadchyna restoration company intends to destroy the wall paintings despite the previously developed and scientifically substantiated highly artistic draft design of restoration of the Minsk Pshazdzietskis family palace with the preservation and renewal of the wall paintings.
In his appeal to the Ministry of Culture, the Monuments Protection Society head informs that the palace reconstruction project performed on the Minskaya Spadchyna order will in the short term ruin the remains of the unique interior wall paintings and the historical layout of the building. This violates Articles 27 and 28 of the law On Protection Of History And Culture Heritage Of The Republic Of Belarus, as well as the legal and methodic documents in the area of protection of history and culture heritage.
Astapovich proposes suspending any types of work at the said history and culture valuable object except scientific and research work, summoning a meeting with the participation of all interested parties to discuss the restoration concept of this monument, and considering this issue at the session of the Belarusian Republican Scientific and Methodic Council on the Issues of History and Culture Heritage Protection managed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus.
