Authorities send Freedom Day organizers to Banhalor square
The march to the city centre is prohibited on the basis of Article 9 of the law On Mass Events.
The Minsk City Executive Committee deputy head Mikhal Tsitsiankou informs the applicants of the Freedom Day celebration that the march along the Independence avenue (Niezalezhnastsi avenue) in the direction of the Yanki Kupaly park isn’t allowed on the basis of Article 9 of the law On Mass Events. The meeting in the Yanki Kupaly park isn’t allowed, the formal reason being the park’s reconstruction and improvement.
The Minsk City Executive Committee proposes making the march from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. along the Surhanava street to the Peoples’ Friendship park (Siabroustva Narodau park) located near the Banhalor square (a remote park of Minsk – the only place where independent meetings are sometimes allowed by the authorities), and to hold the meeting there. The officials have no remarks concerning the time and the place of gathering – the celebrative event will start in front of the Academy of Sciences at 6 p.m. on March 25.
The reaction of the event’s organizing committee to the decision of the Minsk City Executive Committee will be voiced at the nearest press conference.
For reference – the Freedom Day (or the Independence Day) is the national Belarusian holiday prohibited by the official authorities. The official Independence Day is celebrated at another date.
