Activist accused of illegal campaigning
Yuras Karetnikau was invited to the Maskouski district administration of Minsk for consideration of a voter’s complaint against him received by the Central Election Committee.
Consideration of the complaint will take place in the Maskouski district territorial election commission on March 2.
The activist thinks authorities want to punish him for distribution of information materials two weeks before the registration of his initiative group. He doesn’t consider himself guilty since he distributed the leaflets as a private individual. In this case, his actions cannot be interpreted as campaigning.
“On the eve of the election campaign to the local Deputies Council, I expressed my opinion that we have no real elections, but also declared my intention to participate in the current election. My motivation is not to allow the development of events according to the authorities’ scenario. I don’t want to allow the officials to mock at people again holding election according to the previously developed scenario when real voting is substituted with approving of previously prepared lists of deputies. This was not my opinion as a delegate for candidate but my private opinion as a citizen, since the election campaign itself hasn’t yet begun”, Karetnikau explains.
