Election Commissions advertising Belaya Rus?

18/02/10

Activists are surprised at advertising of a pro-governmental civil association at the premises of the Frunzienski district territorial election commission of Minsk.

This oddity was noticed by the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) activists Ales Lahviniec and Ales Taustyka while filing the documents for registration of the initiative group to gather signatures for candidate nomination of April 25 local election.

An enormous stand of Frunzienski district division of the pro-governmental Belaya Rus civil association is located in the commission’s premise. In expressive Russian language, the stand assures that this organization is “For powerful and prosperous Belarus!” (a slogan repeatedly used by the authoritarian Belarusian authorities on numerous occasions). A range of photos reflect the allegedly active and intensive work of the organization’s local division for the benefit of the Frunzienski district residents.

“Such huge stand costs much money. Though, the quality of photos is low. Such advertising seems to exist in every district administration all over Belarus. And this is paid by budget money!” Lahviniec expresses his resentment.

The very fact that an advertising stand of one of associations of Belarus is located in the premises of the state administration which should be neutral cannot be accepted. Commissions might as well have placed the information about the MFF in their premises since the MFF is the officially registered civil association, too!

Because of the presence of the stand in the governmental premises, Lahviniec and Taustyka left a complaint in the Frunzienski District Administration’s book of complaints and proposals. They noted in the book that aside from violating the principal of neutrality of governmental agencies, the outrageous fact of the presence of such stand injures their aesthetic feelings and dignity of being Belarusian citizens.
