MFF leader meets with Hans-Gert Pöttering and Jacek Protasiewicz

13/02/10

Aliaksandr Milinkievich discussed with Hans-Gert Pöttering, the head of the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and with Jacek Protasiewicz, the head of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Belarus, the economic, social and political situation in Belarus, the results of the dialogue with the EU and the prospects of increasing its efficiency, the EU’s Eastern Partnership Initiative, as well as the condition of political parties, civil organizations, and media in Belarus.

“Pöttering is the man who – notwithstanding his becoming a common deputy of the European Parliament – continues to be very influential in Europe due to his work and his position. His attitude towards human rights is very close to that of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. These are people who are firmly committed to the defense of freedom. His visit to Belarus is a clear demonstration of the Germany’s anxiety about the state of human rights and democracy in Belarus, and proves that Germany will do everything possible to improve Belarusians’ opportunities to live in a free society. Mr. Pöttering heads the fund which supports democracy. They would like to know the current situation in order to define priorities and to chose the appropriate policy”, Milinkevich said in his interview to Radio Freedom (Radiyo Svaboda).

The purpose of the European parliamentarians’ visit is to demonstrate “the support to the democratic opposition of Belarus”.
