Is the only general education school to remain in Minsk Uskhod-2 sub-district?

12/02/10

Citizens’ collective appeals against closing the Minsk school No.70 were redirected to the Pershamayski District Education Department which initiated the liquidation of this educational institution.

At the general meeting of the parents this January, the parents whose children study in the Secondary School No.70 opposed closing this educational institution which – by the Pershamayski District Education Department’s initiative – should happen this year.

The Movement for Freedom (the MFF) activists helped the parents to draw up the appeal asking to preserve the only general education school located in their sub-district. The appeal was signed by more than 100 parents of the school No.70 students, and was sent to the head of state’s administration, to the Ministry of Education, and to the Minsk City Executive Committee’s Education Department.

However, instead of trying to resolve this controversial issue at a higher level, the responsible officials redirected the parents’ appeal to the very District Education Department which launched the process of school’s liquidation. The people are surprised that the resolution of this issue was completely transferred to the party interested in closing this school. The question remains whether the District Education Department’s officials would reverse their decision after higher authorities were informed of this problem.

“We’ll be hoping that – since this problem became known to a wide public, and since the highest levels of the executive authority got to know about it – the Pershamayski District Administration would abandon its intention to liquidate the Secondary School No.70. This decision is clearly premature. Moreover, it was taken without due consideration of the sub-district residents’ interests”, the MFF activist Viktar Yanchurevich says.
