No places for MFF activists in Election Commission
On January 29, 2010, the joint session of the Baranavichy City Deputies Council and the Baranavichy City Executive Committee took place on the issue of creating the City Territorial Election Commission for the 26th election of deputies of the Baranavichy City Deputies Council. The joint session lasted only 8 minutes in total.
The list of contenders for the Baranavichy City Election Commission members included 20 persons with four of them representing Baranavichy opposition parties and non-governmental civil associations.
There was neither open discussion nor voting for candidates for membership in the Election Commission. The officials merely approved the previously prepared list of the Baranavichy City Election Commission consisting of 13 persons. This list included 2 persons from political parties (the Communist Party of Belarus and the left-wing Just World party), 6 persons from civil organizations (the Belarusian Women Association, the Bielaya Rus, the Belarusian National Youth Association, the Veterans Association, the Belarusian Military Officers Association, and the State Institutions Trade Union). Other 5 persons of the Election Commission were delegated by the employees of various enterprises and by way of signatures collection.
Likewise, the following persons were delegated by way of signatures collection: the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) activist Viktar Syrytsa, the local entrepreneur Tatsiana Malashchanka, and the activist Aliaksiey Marozau (the latter two representing the Belarusian Christian Democracy party). The Baranavichy Council of the F. Skaryna Belarusian Language Society delegated the local entrepreneur Mikalai Padhayski. However, no “miracle” happened: no places were provided in the Election Commission for the representatives of the opposition structures.
