Nominee to the election commission membership being taken to armed forces

27/01/10

Aleh Pronski, the activist from Masty town, who was nominated for the membership in the Hrodna Province Election Commission, was promptly taken to the military enlistment office and was given the call-up paper.

According to Ales Zarembiuk, the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) Hrodna province coordinator, several hours after the application was sent to the Hrodna Province Executive Committee for Pronski’s inclusion in the Hrodna Province Election Commission, someone called him and asked to promptly visit the military enlistment office. The next day, the Adam Mitskievich Agricultural Production Cooperative management – where Pronski works as crop supervisor – was ordered by phone to take Pronski to the Masty Military Enlistment Office where major Remiez gave him the call-up paper. Pronski must come to the military enlistment office on 6:50 a.m. tomorrow to receive the appointment to the military unit to do compulsory military service.

“Pronski’s enlistment is explained entirely by political reasons since the enlistment campaign has finished long ago. Not only did Pronski intend to participate in the Province Election Commission’s work but also had an organized initiative team for registration and election as deputy of the Hrodna Province Deputies Council and Masty District Deputies Council. The authorities were afraid of Pronski’s participation in the election campaign and decided to take him to the armed forces not to allow him to become another democratic deputy in the local Deputies Council”, Zarembiuk explains the situation.

For reference – The Committee for State Security (KGB) offered Aleh Pronski to work for it last year but he refused. Later, he was placed as a graduate to work in a remote agricultural district.
