Belarus should withdraw from the Customs Union Treaty and from the Collective Rapid Reaction Forces Treaty

24/01/10

The participants of the Belarusian Independence Block (BIB) Council meeting expressed their deep concern with the absence of real steps on behalf of the authorities towards political liberalization in Belarus and with signing the agreements with Russia which contradict national interests.

The BIB Council members think that the following facts entirely contradict the announced policy of liberalization and civil dialogue: absence of real steps on the path of political liberalization, renewed pressure on independent media and non-governmental organizations, humiliating compulsory dactylography, entirely superficial amendments to the election law, and a range of other facts.

The meeting’s participants believe that non-transparent relations with Russia and signing the treaties on the Customs Union and on the Collective Rapid Reaction Forces Treaty
contradict national interests and pose real threat to the independence of Belarus and the well-being of its citizens. In order to maintain personal control over the huge profits from oil refining, the Belarusian regime sacrificed the interests of hundred thousands of Belarusian motorcar owners. Today’s negotiations with Russia on regulating the oil prices pose a great threat of oligarchic seizure of Belarusian oil refining enterprises.

The Council’s meeting adopted a political statement which includes the call on the authorities to withdraw from the treaties on the Customs Union and on the Collective Rapid Reaction Forces, as well as to continue the policy of public dialogue and of the full-fledged return of Belarus into the European integration processes.
