BIB defining candidates list

23/01/10

The regular session of the Belarusian Independence Block (the BIB) Council was attended by the representatives of the Movement for Freedom (the MFF), the Belarusian Popular Front party (the BPF), the Belarusian Christian Democracy party (the BCHD), the Young Belarus movement, the Youth Christian and Social Union (YCSU) youth movement, the Right Alliance youth organization, the Young Front, and the Razam (“Together”) solidarity movement.

The main issue discussed by Alaksandr Milinkievich, Yuras Hubarevich, Aliaksiei Yanukievich, Paval Sieviaryniets, Vital Rymasheuski, Artur Finkievich, Ales Shumkievich, Zmitsier Dashkievich, Yuras Karetnikau, and Viachaslau Siuchyk was defining the procedure of forming the single list of democratic candidates for local elections which will take place on April 25.

According to Paval Sieviaryniets, the purpose of the next election campaign is not so much to gain victory in the election or to win mandates (since the conditions for a fair competition haven’t yet been created) as to widen the circle of supporters of each particular democratic contender or candidate.

Preliminary results of drawing up a single list of activists who plan to participation in the local elections as candidates were announced at the session. Currently, it is known that 586 persons from the BIB intend to compete for the local councilor’ mandates. This list can be extended.

The verification of the list at the level of regional coalitions will take place before February 1. Forming and announcing the final BIB’s list is planned to be achieved before February 10. The next meeting of the BIB Council’s members is planned to be held on January 25.
