“Life’s Island” losing its population (photo)
The Movement for Freedom (the MFF) activists continue to keep watch over the fate of homeless people which is very sad sometimes.
The MFF activists from the Harmony club who participate in the Life’s Island initiative didn’t manage to provide the timely help to the homeless man whose name was Siarhiey.
“We knew that a middle-aged man passes the time on the central heating system pipes near the silk factory. This place is on the way to the monastery; so, people who went to or out of the monastery donated him money or food. When the Life’s Island initiative started, we decided to visit this man. We came once; then, we came again before the New Year. And then, we came after the New Year… He wasn’t there. We thought he hides somewhere from the frost but the worst happened”, Khrystafor Zheliapau tells.
A man who begged alms near the monastery told the volunteers that Siarhiey scalded himself and died two days ago:
“At nights”, Aliaksiey answered, “he hid in the central heating system hatches. One day, some flap broke and poured him over with hot water… And Siarhiey died. He sat here all the time near the monastery entrance. So, here he froze over. I’m the last from our group. There is also Raya. But she managed to settle well. She found a man who gave her shelter. And I’m still here”.
At parting, the new acquaintance asked the activists to find shoes for him because the shoes he wears now don’t belong to him – someone gave them to him for some time, as well as the overcoat which he wears.
The MFF activists point out that the humanitarian raids once per week when they distribute warm food and clothes cannot solve this problem. The state should join this work to change the situation. The homeless also asked to help them find some work. This would give them the possibility to earn at least some money for living. They also dream about an asylum in Vitsiebsk where they could wait out severe frosts.
