Activists pay tribute to the memory of Brest defenders (photo)
The members of the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) and of the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) party, the activists of the Young Front movement and of the Dziedzich civil youth association laid flowers at the place where Brest citizens fought heroically with the muscovite army of kniaz Khovanskiy 350 years ago.
In order to pay tribute to the memory of the citizens who died in the battles against invaders, contemporary Brest citizens came to the Brest castle which was the last outpost of resistance. In January 1660, the city was captured by the Russian forces.
20 people took part in this commemorative event.
The activists laid a bunch of flowers with the inscription reading “To heroes who defended Brest from Khovanskiy army in 1660” and lighted candles for their memory. Historians and local ethnographers told the participants of this sad event of the city’s history.
“We decided to begin collecting signatures for the letter to the Brest City Executive Committee demanding to install the memorable sign. We will insist on creating a special commission on considering this issue and on our participation in its work”, the MFF Brest coordinator Dzianis Turcheniak says.
For reference – In the last September, Dzianis Turcheniak offered to the officials to install the memorable sign dedicated to this historical event of 1660 but the City Executive Committee considered this to be inappropriate.
