Vitsiebsk activists defending Siarhiey Kavalenka

11/01/10

The members of the Belarusian Popular Front (the BPF) Conservative Christian Party, Belarusian Christian Democracy (the BCHD) party, and the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) call for solidarity with the man who was apprehended for flying the national flag at the Vitsiebsk city centre.

”Siarhiey Kavalienka made an especially courageous act flying the Christ’s white-red-white flag at the main height of Vitsiebsk on the Christmas holiday. This is very symbolic. Courage of this act reminds us of the deeds of the legendary Miron. Now, we should do everything possible to defend the hero: express our solidarity, present the information about this case to the Belarusian and the international community lest a next political prisoner appears in Belarus. The regime tries to present Kavalienka’s act as a criminal case, but this is a heroic act, in fact”, the BCHD co-chair Paval Sieviaryniets noted.

“The fact that the authorities present Kavalienka’s act as a fraudulent hooliganism shows their illiteracy and cynicism. This is symbolic that Kavalienka put the God’s flag on the festive fir-tree over the red star which is associated with the millions of victims of the Communist regime. With his act, he confirmed on behalf of all Belarus that we want to go into the future with our history and with God. The MFF, the BPF party, all democratic community, and honest Vitsiebsk citizens express their solidarity with Kavalienka and with his family. We will provide any possible help and support to him. This is our honour and duty”, the MFF Vitsiebsk province coordinator Khrystafor Zheliapau declares.

For reference – Siarhiey Kavalienka was apprehended on January 7 for flying white-red-white flag at the top of the main holiday fir-tree of Vitsiebsk which is installed at the Victory Square. Militia want to accuse him of violation of the Criminal Code. According to the BCHD Press Service, trial concerning Kavalienka’s case would probably take place on January 11. The group of the interested citizens calls for bringing food and things to Siarhiey Kavalienka’s isolation ward from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. (Telephone of the Vitsiebsk Temporary Arrest Isolation Ward: 219 846).
