The Monuments Protection Society protesting against the sale of historical buildings in Brest
Anton Astapovich, the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) activist and the Belarusian Voluntary Historical and Cultural Monuments Protection Society head, is confident the detailed restoration plan of the Brest city historical part should be urgently developed.
Astapovich expresses his anxiety with the fact that the buildings which have the status of historical and cultural value based on the decision the Ministry of Culture Belarusian Republican Scientific and Methodical Council on the Issues of Historical and Cultural Heritage Protection were put up for the regular auction on the right to designing and constructing of permanent buildings within the Brest borders.
Under the conditions of the auction – which includes the buildings in the historical centre of the city – “demolition of the real estate objects should be performed in accordance with the procedure defined by the Law”.
Astapovich thinks the investments and construction operations being planned could not only harm the historical and cultural valuable objects but also threaten to destroy them.
“On July 1, the decision was made at the session of the Belarusian Republican Scientific and Methodical Council on the Issues of Historical and Cultural Heritage Protection to develop the detailed restoration plan of the Brest historical centre and to develop its protection areas”, Astapovich reminds.
The Belarusian Voluntary Historical and Cultural Monuments Protection Society protest against unlawful actions in relation to the Brest historical and cultural monuments, calls on the Brest Region Executive Committee to remove the lots with buildings which have historical value from the auction, and to develop the detailed restoration plan of the Brest historical centre.
