Brest Citizens Reminded about Grunwald

14/12/09

On December 12, the Movement for Freedom (the MFF) and the Dziedzich civil youth association activists as well as the Belarusian Popular Front Party members held the event dedicated to the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald.

The activists distributed information materials to the citizens which tell about the secret meeting of the Great Duke of Lithuania Vitaut (Vitautas) and King of Poland Jahaila (Jagiello) in December 1409. It was then that the plan of the summer war with the Teutonic Order was adopted.

Viktar Klimus, the Belarusian Popular Front Party city council chair, tells about the meaning of this event and about the historical importance of the said meeting:

“I think that was a very important event in the history of our city. As a rule, there’s no need to explain to the people how important the Battle of Grunwald was for Belarus. However, people know much less all other facts about the preparation for this battle or about the persons who decided the fate of history of the entire continent at that time. The majority of Brest citizens do not associate Grunwald and Brest. Meanwhile, our city held rather strong positions in the Middle Ages and was a well-known and influential centre. Numerous events of exceptional importance happened in Brest, including the preparation for the campaign against Teutonic crusaders. For it was here that all agreements between the Great Duchy of Lithuania and Kingdom of Poland were concluded and the plans of the military campaign were designed”.

The latest event was rather large-scale and was received by the passers-by with great interest. Two sets of leaflets were distributed – namely, near the Pushkin Brest State University and in the city centre near the Brest 1000th anniversary monument. Approximately two thousand leaflets were distributed.
