10/12/09

Organised by the Movement for Freedom (the MFF), the second day of the demonstration of the films of the Czech One World film festival took place.

Burma VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country tells about the work of the local journalists in conditions of rough dictatorship of Burma. The participants (some fifty people came to watch this film) noticed certain parallels with the Belarusian situation relating to the freedom of mass media.

Iryna Bokhan who arranged the demonstration of this film tells why it was this film Minsk viewers were offered to watch:

“Our Czech friends gave us six motion pictures of the One World festival. We decided to choose this particular film for today’s demonstration. This film doesn’t seem to reflect the problems with human rights in Belarus; however, it is very interesting to Belarusians due to certain parallels”.

According to Andrey Sushko, one of the organizers of this event, the role of the independent mass media in reforming the authoritarian regimes is extremely important.

“Thanks to such films, the world will know of the human rights violations and of the difficult work of the journalists in the authoritarian states. The citizens of the democratic countries influence their governments to properly support the struggle against authoritarian regimes”.

After the film, the viewers were offered to take part in the competition on the human rights advocacy topic. Those who wanted answered in writing several close-end questions relating to the UN creation and organization of its activity.
