Excavation Begins at Former Concentration Camp Place

03/12/09

The construction of an elite house began in the area of Yakub Kolas and Kalinin streets where 140 thousand people died during World War II.

This apartment house with parking lot is being constructed by AAT Mapid (Mapid, Plc.) by the Minsk City Executive Committee’s order. Constructors have already sawn down several dozens of great old trees, built access roads for construction machinery in the green area, and began excavation works. Mr. Vasilievich, the ZBK Imklivy (Imklivy housing cooperative society) representative, manages constructors’ operations.

The neighbouring houses residents feel resentment to this new building for several reasons. The Movement for Freedom (the MFF) supports people and is ready to continue providing organizational assistance.

One of the sound reasons of the protest against construction of this house is that the piece of land allocated for building development is the place where 140 thousand Minsk citizens died. In 1941-1944, a concentration camp for soviet prisoners of war and civilians was located here. Corresponding memorable signs are installed here. Information about the fact that Minsk citizens died during the war at this place was confirmed by the head of the Minsk Piershamayski District Executive Committee Culture Department.

Since the construction of this house was ordered by state agencies, the residents of this quarter are preparing the address to the head of state asking to promptly stop the construction of this apartment house because they think this is a scoff at the memory of the World War II victims.
