Documentaries Festival for the International Human Rights Day
The Movement for Freedom (the MFF) Minsk activists arrange the demonstration of three documentary films on the human rights advocacy topic. These films were demonstrated at the Czech One World film festival in the spring 2009. The Minsk event is dedicated to the International Human Rights Day celebrated on December 10.
The following films are offered to the viewers:
• Pray the Devil Back to Hell (USA / 2008)
An unusual story of great courage of Muslim and Christian women in Liberia who – notwithstanding their religious difference –struggle together to stop the bloody civil war raging in their country.
• Burma VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, UK)
This film tells about the work of the local journalists in conditions of rough dictatorship of Burma. The news materials made by the local journalists during the anti-governmental uprising and during subsequent suppression of this uprising in 2007 got to all leading information agencies of the world since they were the only source of information about the actual situation in Burma.
• The Power of the Powerless (Czech Rep.)
This is a film about the importance of the analysis and making of conclusions from the mistakes of the past for the development of the civil community. This film – commented by the Oscar winner Jeremy Irons – aims to answer why many Czechs today don’t want their communist past to be disclosed.
These films will be demonstrated on December 7-9 in the Grown Plaza hotel’s conference hall (Kirova str. 13, 1st floor). Beginning: at 6.30 p.m.
In the days of the Festival, the results of the essays competition arranged by the MFF activists on the eve of the Human Rights Day will be evaluated.
Admission to the Festival is free of charge; however, prior registration is preferable. Registration is possible through mail at zasvabodu.minsk@gmail.com or by SMS sent to +375 29 331 2681.
