Drybin District Executive Committee Promising to Make New Information Signs in Belarusian

26/11/09

This problem was noticed by Andrey Yurkou, a Movement for Freedom (the MFF) activist. He sent a corresponding inquiry addressed to the head of the Drybin District Executive Committee.

Yurkou asked the local authorities to explain why new settlement signs installed in Drybin district are written in Russian. He drew the attention of the local administration to the fact that the names of settlements on the signs in all neighbouring districts are made in Belarusian. Compared to them, Drybin district stands out in a negative way.

However, the district head doesn’t promise to immediately begin the installation of new signs in Belarusian which was asked by Yurkou.

In his answer, P.I. Panasiuha, the head of the Drybin District Executive Committee, explained that “The installation of the information signs is performed in accordance with the STB-1140-99 standard, par. 4.1.17, which reads as follows – “Inscriptions shall be made in Belarusian or in Russian (predominantly in Belarusian)” and promised that “When replacing the worn-down information signs, new signs will have Belarusian inscriptions”.
