Nuclear renaissance alleged by Siamashka
Vice Prime minister Uladzimer Siamashka replied to the letter prepared by the activists of Movement “For freedom” in Horki (Mahileu region) in the framework of Antinuclear campaign.
1000 people in this region signed the letter calling for the government to abandon nuclear power plant construction in Horki.
Three months ago the campaigners, during a meeting in Horki, handed over a package of signatures to deputy of the House or representatives Tacciana Asmalouskaya, calling her to deliver the petition and signatures to the Council of Ministers.
Now, in his response Siamashka argues that Nuclear power plant (NPP) will allow producing enough electricity to cover 30% out of needs of the whole country. Meanwhile natural gas almost all supplied by Russia to Belarus provides 95% of overall electricity production what is problematic for the government in terms of energy security. As vice Prime minister states nuclear fuel will give more opportunities to diversify supply. Regional economy is alleged to boost thanks to NPP construction. Siamashka also assumes that so-called nuclear renaissance can be seen in the world now. He is certain that modern reactors are safer and more environmentally compatible. Besides, he claims that more than 50% of Belarusians supported the NPP building while 60% of people from Mahileu region agreed for this construction on their territory.
Such response cannot be accepted because Siamashka’s figures are not credible. We can say that referring to study we have been conducting while meeting people and collecting their signatures. In fact, it is more than 60% of people in Mahileu region expressed their support for the Antinuclear campaign. Nowadays we have already got 2520 signatures and we keep on our activity, - Eduard Brokarau, activist of Movement “For freedom”argued.
