Statement on adoption of law about media after first hearing in the Belarusian House of representatives

23/06/08

Regime just proved its course to abolishing freedom of speech in Belarus after having a revised law “On media” adopted. Those few independent newspapers which could survive all earlier attacks on information field are facing at bitter conditions. Apparently the regime persists to take over Internet and to destroy local network connections.

Independent sources allow Belarusians to resist state propaganda machine. This is the reason why authorities get in panic when people begin demonstrating their self-organization capabilities and try to exchange theirs views freely. The regime aims at further splitting Belarusian society by eliminating communication tools and opportunities.

I express my solidarity with people who struggle for independent media in Belarus. I am sharing the increased concern of Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) and all others who think that this law leads to much more degradation of situation with freedom of speech in Belarus and therefore I am fully sympathizing with a proposition of Nasha Niva newspaper calling people to appeal to the authorities against a final adoption of the revised law on media by posting letters of protests.

I call on all people not indifferent to freedom of speech in Belarus to join the campaign.
