Meeting of the Movement for Freedom Council took place

09/06/09
At the meeting it was noted that the purpose of the representative Pro-European Forces Forum, which is scheduled for November, is to unite and to mobilize the supporters of the rapprochement of Belarus with the European Union.

Prior to the Forum, broad format meetings will be held in regions which will elect their respective delegates. There are plans to try and hold legally permitted meetings – including in the premises of the district community halls – and to invite famous analysts, policy makers and economists.

The Forum doesn’t intend to elect a single democratic or European forces candidate. According to Aliaksandr Milinkevich, the idea of the European strategy has much more supporters than the idea of choosing a single leader.

According to Viktar Karneyenka, MFF deputy chair, now it is very important for the democratic forces to maintain the status of the Western Europe’s partner. It should be declared at the Congress that Belarus has the politicians who are ready to take the responsibility for the fate of the state. The MFF remains open to cooperation with all pro-European forces. At the moment the address of the MFF leader, designed to invite all willing to join the Congress preparation process, is being prepared. Consolidation should be made on the basis of shared European values.

According to the MFF deputy chair, nowadays for a politician in order to have support of Belarusians and the European Union it is not enough just to disagree with the authorities. Democratic forces should propose a detailed actions plan and the steps to implement it. These shall be presented at the autumn Forum.

“We are obliged to become the generator of new ideas. Our line is clear − we are for the critical and conditional dialogue with the united Europe in which the civil society takes active part. In addition to the monitoring of the situation with the human rights, we should propose the European Union the definite strategy of our activity (in partnership with the EU) on the democratization and liberalization of Belarus. If we don’t do this, only the EU and the Belarusian authorities would participate in the dialogue”, Aliaksandr Milinkevich thinks.

According to Aliaksandr Milinkevich, the group of analysts is currently working on the strategy of the development of Belarus in the European direction. It is important that such programme is adopted at the Congress.

As a result of discussions at the Council meeting, the decision was made to hold the Belarusian European Forum in November aiming to mobilize all supporters of the European choice, and to make proposals at the organizing committee meeting on how the Forum should be organized, on the candidates’ election procedure and on the Forum preparation calendar plan.

At the end of the Council meeting, new members were admitted to the MFF Human Rights Civil Organization – over 100 persons from Brest, Viciebsk, Homel, Mahilou, and Minsk Regions.
